Red-eyed Tree Frog: Despite its bright coloration, the red-eyed tree frog is not poisonous. During the day, the frog uses its green back to camouflage amongst the leaves. If disturbed, the tree frog flashes its bright red eyes, which may startle predators and allow the frog to escape.
Sloths live in the tropical forests of Central and South America. With their long arms and shaggy fur, they resemble monkeys, but they are actually related to armadillos and anteaters. Sloths are among the slowest-moving animals on Earth. They can swim but are virtually unable to walk. Two toes or three? Two in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. The two-toed sloths are nocturnal and have two long, curved toes on their front feet, and three curved toes on their back feet. Do not touch any sloths that you come across on your trip. The fur of a sloth is home to a thriving ecosystem of insects, algae, and fungi.
Quetzals are a spectacularly coloured species belonging to the trogon family, a group of colorful, fruit-eating birds found in Central America. Males have iridescent green plumes, a red lower breast and belly, black innerwings and a white undertail.
White-faced capuchins thrive in the cloud forests of Costa Rica. They are considered the most intelligent of the new world monkeys, and use tools such as a rock as a hammer or a log as an anvil to crack open nuts. They have a prehensile tail.
Toucans are the clowns of the bird kingdom, tossing a small fruit in the air and catching it themselves, or tossing one up for their neighbour. These cuties are killers who hunt tarantulas, lizards and other birds. Toucans are not a type of parrot. They are softbills, and are more closely related to barbets and woodpeckers than they are to any of the parrot family.
Scarlet macaws are some of the most spectacular avian species in the world. They are intelligent, social, and brightly coloured. Macaws are the largest parrots in the world—the body of the scarlet macaw from beak to tail can be as long as 33 inches.
