A very interesting day trip to kick off the 2024 scuba season! Thirteen divers, including Divemaster Martin Bonert, explored the variety of underwater delights at the Wiarton scuba park at Cedar Hill Park on Saturday, June 22, 2024.
The day started with a Divemaster review for those Divemasters who are new to the Blue North / HHUC approach to club diving. Then, between the rain showers, two dives for the group were completed before driving home.
This was an excellent shore dive for:
- newly certified divers to gain scuba experience, practice skills such as buoyany control and navigation with the supervision of a Divemaster at a site with easy access and gentle underwater slope
- experienced divers to have a “warm-up” dive for the summer ahead
- scuba divers to try out new equipment
- new Blue North divemasters to gain experience with Martin
- anyone who wants to have a little fun underwater, explore a new site, and hang out with fellow divers!
Here’s the underwater description:
- Entry: The entry is gradual with a rocky-sandy slope. There’s a grassy area along the beach, great for suiting up and picnicking.
- Depth: Maximum depth for this Blue North dive will be 60 ft. The majority of the attractions underwater are at the 35 to 60 ft range. The descent is quite gradual, so Cedar Hill can accommodate many levels of dive experience. (Skip the Eiffel Tower, Rocket Ship and Santa if you want to stay above 50 ft.)
- Water temperature: The water is fairly warm during the summer months – reaching approx. 15°C above the thermocline near shore. 7mm wetsuit diving should be comfortable.
- Visibility: Cedar Hill is part of Georgian Bay which tends to have decent visibility even during summer months.
- Fish: Some say you may see typical Canadian freshwater fish species like trout, perch, bass and lake whitefish if they don’t get scared away by underwater sightseers.
- Underwater attractions: At Cedar Hill Park, you can visit quite a lot of different underwater features within a relatively small area – the dome, windmill, rocket, Eifel tower, little shipwreck, cemetery, skeleton, snowmobile, newspaper stand, computer, bicycle, and other goofy things added by divers for your entertainment. This site is fun and ideal for divers of all levels. A great place to spend a day and practice your underwater navigation.
